Au terme de la résidence de recherche sur le patrimoine urbain et architectural dakarois, effectuée au cours des mois de mai et juin 2023, les architectes Carole Diop et Nzinga Mboup exposent les fruits de leur enquête, collectés au gré de leurs pérégrinations, rencontres et échanges multiples, sous un angle sensible et résolument optimiste.
Sans tomber dans les écueils d’une nostalgie passéiste pour ce qui a été et en s’émancipant d’une mélancolie résignée face à l’impuissance des tentatives activistes pour la protection du bien commun, elles nous présentent différentes manières possibles de lutter collectivement pour ce qui vaut la peine d’être transmis en héritage.
Carole et Nzinga convoquent ainsi, à travers leur démarche, la mémoire collective des dakarois et questionnent leur rapport à leur ville. Le titre est inspiré du nom du collectif initié par Jean-Charles Tall et Annie Jouga dans les années 90, après l’incendie de Kermel, en réaction aux polémiques liées à sa préservation : il évoque leur combat exemplaire et continu pour la valorisation des patrimoines et est une source d’inspiration qui rappelle aux jeunes architectes leur mission multidisciplinaire dans la valorisation de l’héritage.
At the end of the research residency on Dakar’s urban and architectural heritage carried out during the months of May and June 2023, the architects Carole Diop and Nzinga Mboup present the fruits of their research, collected during their multiple journeys, encounters, and exchanges, from a sensitive and resolutely optimistic perspective.
Without lapsing into backward-looking nostalgia for what was, and by emancipating themselves from accepted melancholy in the face of the helplessness of activists’ attempts to protect the common good, they present different ways of collectively fighting for what can become legacy.
Carole and Nzinga thus summon, through their approach, the collective memory of Dakar’s residents, and question their relationship to their city. The title is inspired by the name of the collective initiated by Jean-Charles Tall and Annie Jouga in the 90s, after the Kermel fire, in reaction to the controversies linked to its preservation: it evokes their exemplary and continuous fight for the valorization of heritage and is a source of inspiration that reminds young architects of their multidisciplinary mission for the promotion of heritage.
